Rangers: Live by the scoreless draw …

May 4th, 2008 | By: Ian Rose | 3 Comments

You know the rest.

Just as Rangers held firm in defense and offered little in attack in Thursday’s penalty UEFA Cup semifinal win over Fiorentina, they were similarly held scoreless by Hibernian today. A fantastic defensive effort from Hibs kept all but two of Rangers’ eleven shots from even approaching Andrew McNeil’s goal, and while Hibs had some great possession, they were fairly toothless themselves in attack, only managing three shots on goal. These were handled well by backup Rangers keeper Neil Alexander. Say what you will about Rangers’ strategy, but Allan McGregor’s shoes were very large ones to fill, and Alexander has done a great job.

We’re getting into what Sir Alex would refer to as squeeky bum time. Celtic now have a 7-point lead over Rangers, still with three games in hand. With their victory over Motherwell on Saturday, thanks to a late Samaras goal, they made up two points this weekend, and widened their goal difference lead. The title is still in Rangers’ hands to lose, as they can clinch it by winning all their remaining matches, or with a mistake from Celtic. Still, things looked so much better three weeks ago for the Blue end of Glasgow. A European final is a great achievement for them, but a third straight Celtic championship would take a lot of the polish off of it, and the room for error is now incredibly small.

Celtic have just two matches left: a home match with the obviously troublesome Hibees, and a trip to Dundee to face United. Both Hibs and United need any points they can get, locked in a battle for UEFA Cup qualification with Motherwell. ‘Well, on the other hand, is the team most likely to give the Hoops the help they need to win the title. They play Rangers twice in eleven days, with the UEFA Cup final and another league match for Rangers sandwiched between. No matter which side of the Old Firm fence you’re on (or if you have no preference), it continues to be a hell of a run in.

Rangers’ “never ever score” strategy works out well - the Final awaits

By: Ian Rose | Comments 8 Comments

I’m not going to make a long post, but I do want to congratulate Rangers on making it to the UEFA Cup final. Actually, both finalists - as much as I pull for every Scottish team in Europe, I really like Zenit as well, and I’m happy for both. I stand in complete awe both [...]

Motherwell loses captain in bar “attack”

By: Ian Rose | Comments 5 Comments

Details are sketchy, but here’s an incident has popped up which might just have consequences all over the SPL. Paul Quinn, captain of Motherwell, is out for the rest of the season with a broken jaw after being attacked outside a nightclub in Wishaw, his hometown. No one seems to be [...]

Rangers look for 47-year-old payback

By: Ian Rose | Comments 4 Comments

The day is upon us. To be honest, going into this season, I didn’t expect to see an SPL side in a continental semifinal this year. Even with both of the Old Firm coming off of final-16 runs last season, I just didn’t see either making a run this deep. Still, Rangers [...]

Here come the Accies, and other news

By: Ian Rose | Comments 1 Comment

This past week or so has featured a lot of blogging distraction for me, between losing my voice screaming for my new local side and spending Sunday on the Offside’s main page, not to mention the podcast. So, I apologize for completely dropping the ball on a couple of major news items having to [...]

Rangers 2 - Celtic 1 (awards, that is)

By: Ian Rose | Comments 2 Comments

The annual awards in the SPL have been handed out, and no real surprises here, considering where the big teams are and why they are there. Walter Smith has his team ahead in the league with games in hand, alive in both the Scottish and UEFA Cups, and with their first hardware in three [...]

Dons crash out in 4-3 thriller

By: Ian Rose | Comments 2 Comments

We have one of our Scottish Cup finalists, and it’s a shocker to be placed right next to Cardiff City in that other Cup. Going into today’s semifinal between Aberdeen and Queen of the South, the Dons looked great to take a clinical victory and move on to a final where, if they faced [...]

A pretty big day of news in the SPL today. First, Aberdeen has succeeded in climbing out of their early funk to make the top half of the league on the last day before the split. For those of you not familiar with the peculiarities of Scottish football, here goes. The SPL [...]

I hope that some of you appreciate the historical importance of this post. Mark your calendars, folks. An Inverness Caledonian Thistle fan is about to praise Ross County. Though the two have been bitter rivals since the old days, when County and both of Caley Thistle’s original teams were in the Highland [...]

Barr wins Player of the Month

By: Ian Rose | Comments Add Comments

Congratulations to Falkirk central defender Darren Barr on winning the Player of the Month award in the SPL for March. Much has been made this season of young Hearts captain Christophe Berra, but Barr is just as young and also captains an SPL side, one that happens to be a point ahead of Berra’s [...]

Celtic Lhadies Reach Scottish Cup Finals: More musings on Hun-Gate

The Ghirls of Celtic have reached the Scottish Cup Finals with a 3-2 defeat. Celtic got a goal from Christie Miller and Jo Love, the girl in question in the Hun-gate controversy, knocked in two. All of the Ghirls goals came in a first half that Celtic dominated. The second half was much more tense as the Sheep Sha...aw that joke is too easy...Aberdeen got a goal back early and pressured for the equalizer. Apparently the Ghirls have been taking notes on the Bhoys defense and prescribed a "bend but not break" defense. It was enough to win the day and move onto the finals. The Ghirls now have a showdown with Hibernian in the Finals at McDiarmid Park on Saturday, May 17.

Monday Link Dump

First, I'm not sure even if the readers of this blog who are American have been watching the NBA playoffs, but there have been some good commercials called "Where Amazing Happens". Well, a Tim (I'm assuming a North American, who if reading should check out the North American Celtic Supporters Forum, the Dead Raibead Forum) made a Celtic version and it is surprisingly good. Check it out here. Stephen McManus missed last weekends match against Motherwell after straining his calf against Rangers. While early reports were that Captain Mick was going to miss the remaining games, Mick is hopeful that he will be back in time this season.

Celtic 2-Motherwell1: Pittsburgh Edition!

Bhoy, are you guys unlucky. I was planning on doing a live blog for yesterdays game, bright and early at 7:30 Eastern Time. You would have been exposed to some unprecedented obscenities for the first 60 minutes of the game. "Some artists work in oils or clays, [Matt]'s medium is obscenities." However, I had to head to the Steel City early yesterday morning for a family funeral. Luckily Tyler Durden of the Dead Raibead kept me updated via mobile phone and Channel 67 (rip off but my home computer refuses to let me *ahem* type random letters and have the game show up, so I ponied up the cash for a month subscription) let me rewatch the game. Like all of you, even though I knew the results I still got to experience in all the frustration!

Motherwell Preview

Rather than talk about "anti-fitbaw", it is time to focus on Motherwell. After all, why talk about the second time a Scottish team did something? Anyways, tomorrow morning will see the Bhoys travel to Fir Park. The last time the Green and White were there things did not go so well, with Celtic losing 1-0. This is a different team with a different attitude. A team on a roll, if you will. All three strikers have found the net recently, Aiden has been having his usual pin point crosses, and Gary Caldwell has not tripped over his feet in at least 3 games. However, perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle has been in the middle of the park. Unlikely heroes Barry "Robo Cop" Robson and Paul Hartley have seemed to have formed a strong tandem that have been the controlling force that Celtic have been looking for.

The Return of the King

News broke today of Henrik Larsson, King of Kings, will be returning to Celtic Park to wear the Hoops one last time. Henrik will be joining other members of the famous 1998 Celtic side that "stopped the 10" to honor the late Phil O'Donnell for a tribute match May 25 against Motherwell at Celtic Park. Along with Larsson, the Hoops side will feature Jackie McNamara (the recently "retired" Jackie Mac for coaching position?), Paul Lambert, Tom Boyd, Morten Wieghorst, Alan Stubbs, Craig Burley and Stephane Mahe for the game. The Motherwell side will feature players from the 'well's 1991 Scottish Cup winning side. Former Celtic Boss Wim Jansen will be in the dugout for the Hoops as well. Proceeds for the game will go towards the O'Donnell Family Trust fund and other charities. A web site to honor Phil's memory and to purchase tickets for the game has been created and can be found here: http://www.philodonnelltribute.com/.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye...The Court of My Public Opinion is in Session!

All rise for the Honorable Judge Matt. The first case is the state vs. the Scottish Football Association. Another charge of bias against the Celtic Football Club. Reports surfaced that the SFA were looking into possible punishments for Artur Boruc for wearing this shirt:
The state is alleging that the SFA, worried that Sellik is going to catch "Der Peeple" in the title are looking for any reason to handicap Sellik in the process. The state presents these images of Rangers players with similar shirts who received no punishment (more after the jump)

More Metaphors

Here in the little bubble from the outside of the world that I like to call “College-Land”, final examinations week is up coming. This where everything you learned comes back and you use it to ultimately succeed when it counts. You study harder than you have all year, perhaps cramming some info that you never learned in the first place. Sure, there are distractions, as people will be saying “Aw, come out to the bars, it’s your last weekend here!” but you’ve got to focus, because it is now or never. Well this situation can be paralleled to the Celtic Football Club very well. Think of Celtic as your average B student this year. They started off the year decently enough, doing well early in classes (being in first place for the first part of the season). They got a little cocky and thought “Why not drink before the night of the test? I know that shit well enough and it’s History 101! That class is sooooo easy!” but of course their grade on said test was not so pretty (early losses to Hibernian, Inverness Caley Thistle). Then that fucking Physics class came! Who fucking needs Physics? It’s so fucking hard, even when he gives it his best! (Being knocked out of the Champions League by giants Barcelona). After that bad grade in Physics, the student got a little frustrated with school and decided to “not give a fuck” as the kids say these days (draws with Falkirk, Motherwell, being knocked out of the cup by Aberdeen).

News round up! Yee-haaw!

Over the past couple of days, there have been a couple newsworthy stories either directly or indirectly involving the Bhoys in Green and White. The first of which is Aiden McGeady scooping up the award double this past weekend after being named both the Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year by the Scottish Professional Football Players Association. McGeady got the from fellow SPL players over teammates Barry Robson and Scott McDonald, as well as Rangers Defender and goalie in training (special thanks to the famous Tim Park for the wonderful commentary on that video) Carlos Cuellar. McGeady winning this award means that for the third year in a row a Celtic player has picked up this award. After winning the award, McGeady said "“I am surprised. I thought there were a couple of people ahead of me for Player of the Year and I thank my team-mates for helping me win and my fellow professionals who voted for me." Oh don't be bashful, Aideninho...EDIT: Aiden also thanked Nacho Novo for "letting him out of his pocket to collect his awards
