Celtic v. Shakhtar Divetsk … Now THAT’s anti-football

By: Ian Rose | November 28th, 2007

With all of the talk about Scottish football and “anti-football” (yeah, I know Messi never said it), Celtic faced a team who played real anti-football today. As far as I’m concerned, purely defensive football has its place, and I think the term “anti-football” is a bit unfair for it. To me, anti-football is the use of tactics that undermine the game itself, and that’s what we saw tonight from Shakhtar. Flagrant diving. Flagrant time-wasting. Granted, they were only allowed to do this because of the terrible officiating, but let that take nothing from the equally awful play from Shakhtar. Celtic took it at the last minute, on another fantastic Donati goal, and I’m sure JT will be on later with a match report, but what really stuck out to me was the theatrics from Shakhtar. As a Caley Thistle fan, I’ve never been so happy to see Celtic win a match. It’s really too bad, because Shakhtar’s play this season had really impressed me, but tonight was just sad to see.

Spot on, Ian. The rolling around and feigning injury was sad, and it started right after they scored in the 4th minute! The good part is that it gave Celtic some extra time during extra time to get their first goal! Karma is bitch sometimes.

Also, I love the “Diving” and “Cheating” tags. Pure comedy.

I was surprised that Shakhtar played like that. They would have done much better playing their own game. Disappointing really, since the last thing this tournament needs is more displays of stupidity.

Cmon hoops!!! Celtic totally deserved to win that game. Diving no diving, Celtic overcame the bad officiating and won the game. For its a grand old team to play for…
