Rangers’ “never ever score” strategy works out well - the Final awaits

By: Ian Rose | May 1st, 2008

I’m not going to make a long post, but I do want to congratulate Rangers on making it to the UEFA Cup final. Actually, both finalists - as much as I pull for every Scottish team in Europe, I really like Zenit as well, and I’m happy for both.

I stand in complete awe both of Rangers’ ability to keep clean sheets this season, and of their incredible inability to put the biscuit in the basket themselves. 0-0 after TWO HUNDRED AND TEN MINUTES. That’s two matches, plus extra time. Yikes. Still, the table never lies, as they say, and with a lot of great teams done in Europe, Rangers and Walter Smith have made it work. It might be ugly, but the trophy looks the same no matter how you win it.

That being said, as a fan of football in general and the UEFA Cup specifically, I’m making this plea. Zenit strikers (sans Pavel Pogrebnyak, who will miss the final) - SCORE EARLY in the final. I want Rangers to win it, make no mistake, but I also want an attractive game, and that’s the way to get one.

I usually have no problems when the underdogs play anti-football to achieve their upsets. E.g. in a way I found Greece’s minimalistic title run four years ago very entertaining. Though, Rangers were playing Champions League and only just missed out on making it to the next round, so I can’t really see them as underdogs against a team like Fiorentina. As such, no love from me for such a game. But still a great result for the Scottish league; this is already something like the league’s third best ever European season (coefficient wise) .

The real heroes of this European season for Scotland are still Aberdeen. We’ve gotten so used to the UEFA Cup spots being total wastes in Scotland, but they made a great run. No, I don’t think of Rangers as underdogs against Viola either, and I’m as disappointed as anyone that they played negative football, because I don’t think it was necessary. They have some good attacking players … they just don’t use them. Still, as you say, great year for the coefficients.

Ha … good to see you all pissed and happy. Caley don’t tend to be homophobic, but there are exceptions, just like with all clubs. Believe me - I hate them as much as anyone. They make my club look bad.

Congrats to Rangers, I hope they win because seeing Scottish teams do well in Europe is good for Scottish football in general.

As for Aberdeen (my team, ‘mon the reds!), aye they had a good run (unbeaten at home in Europe this season) but the real problems are only beginning now, with many players out the door and very little hope of rebuilding a team needed to challenge the Old Firm. Realistically, for most teams in Scotland outside of the Old Firm is simple: dont get relegated, and finish third.

Seb - I want Rangers to win for the same reason, but at this point, on the big stage of a final, I think it would be great for Scottish football if the team representing the SPL showed a bit more attacking quality. I guess I want it all, a winner and an attractive winner at that.

And yes, I’m sorry to see all the problems happening in Aberdeen. Next to Caley, your reds are my favorite side, and it’s going to be a very tough rebuilding time, again. I hate to say it, but the only realistic way to break the Old Firm is to get a billionaire owner like Vlad at Hearts … just hopefully a less crazy one.

Sorry but….I hope the fitba anti-christ gets humped in the final. Not interested in the good of Scottish fitba’…mind you that’s only when it comes to r*ngers….

But they got there and you can’t take that away from them.1st team ever to get to a Euro final wieoot scoring in the semi.

    Some sort of feat that.

Fair enough Keving - you’ll have to join me and pull for Queen of the South next year in Europe. Now that would be an underdog.
