It’s official: Gretna administered and relegated

It’s long been suspected, especially since the failing health of owner Miles Brookson has come to light, but now it’s official. Gretna and the SPL have confirmed that last season’s promotion side Gretna FC will certainly be headed for administration, and thus the mandatory 10-point penalty. Now sitting in last place eleven points behind St. Mirren, this takes relegation from a reasonable near certainty to a statistical one.

You had a great three-year rise through the Scottish leagues, Gretna. I hope you enjoyed it. The ride down will be less pleasant, but hopefully, the team can get its finances sorted and do decently in the First Division. In the future, especially if the SPL expands, as I believe it must, to 18 or 20 teams, we could very well see Gretna again.

Expand? Wouldn’t that dilute the league more?

Not really surprising, would be a turn of events if they pulled a Leeds and some how survived but that seems like the stuff of fantasy.

I was thinking about it, and wondered would their finances be better if they weren’t forced into fixing their ground? Tickets sales would obviously be up and they would have the money that they spent on fixing the ground. Not sure if it is true, but just a thought.
