Mixu takes over Hibs
By: Ian Rose | January 10th, 2008Andy from Scotzine beat me to the punch in my own comments area, but Hibernian now have a manager, and its one that should at least start off popular with the support.
Mixu Paatelainen is a Hibs legend, having scored 39 goals for the Edinburgh side, including most notably a hat trick in a 6-2 rout of rivals Hearts in 2000. He’s had an impressive coaching career, first leading Cowdenbeath to their first title in 67 years, then moving on to a successful run at Finnish club TPS, who just finished their season in third place, their highest table place in a decade.
I have to say, this is a brilliant signing for Hibs. Not only is Mixu a proven manager, but he will excite the Hibs support more than maybe any other choice. He is a Hibee, and in times of crisis, keeping the stands filled is important. Hibernian may not be in quite the depth of trouble that crosstown Hearts find themselves, but one win in twelve for an Edinburgh side is a crisis in my book. He also has some experience in Easter Road’s offices, having worked in youth development there. It’s a perfect signing to my mind.
Mixu starts his Hibs career this Saturday, hosting my own Inverness Caley Thistle in the Scottish Cup. Caley has been on a good run, especially striker Marius Niculae, and Hibs will need to shut the Romanian down as well as reach in and find some long-lost offense of their own. Of course, I’d prefer that his luck not begin until next week, but still, good luck to Mixu and Hibs in getting the ship righted at Easter Road.
