League Cup quarters: Celtic out, Caley thrashed
By: Ian Rose | October 31st, 2007Well, the Halloween night quarterfinals of the League Cup are over, and the final four are Rangers, Dundee United, Hearts and Aberdeen. That’s right. Hearts. The Jambos fans have had little to get excited about this season, but they managed to knock out Celtic, admittedly, from the competition the Bhoys cared the least about. It was all tied up at Parkhead until the 77th minute, when Hearts’ Andrius Velička managed to break the deadlock and put Hearts up. He put in another in the 89th to finish off the Hoops, 2-0. Elsewhere, Aberdeen crushed Inverness Caley Thistle 4-1 in a match that was never really in question. Two penalties for the Dons in the opening 30 minutes and a 45th minute goal put Caley down 3-0 at the half. Graham Bayne managed a consolation goal, but even that was brought back, and Aberdeen move on to the semis in dominating style. Dundee United ended the dream for second-tier Hamilton with their 3-1 win, on a Noel Hunt hat trick. Rangers took out tricky Motherwell 2-1 on goals from Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo.
And so, there will be no Old Firm cup derby this season, at least not in the league cup. Rangers have to be the favorite now, and will be hungry after two seasons without any trophies at Ibrox. Hearts and Aberdeen will be looking to spoil, but Dundee’s performance this past weekend against Rangers makes them a very dangerous side as well. Should be interesting.
