Hutton to Spurs? Nope.
By: Ian Rose | January 3rd, 2008UPDATE: Hutton has turned down the offer from Spurs. No word yet on whether he’s looking elsewhere or happy to stay at Ibrox.
Ever since Rangers’ quick start in their Champions League group, especially the 3-0 drubbing of Lyon (later, of course, reversed), Alan Hutton has been on a lot of potential transfer lists. His performances for Scotland have been even more impressive. The Scotland and Rangers right back impressed a lot of people in a lot of different leagues during that time, and now it looks like he might be headed down to England. Spurs have apparently made an 8-million-pound offer on Hutton, and early reports are that a deal has been struck. It’s a bit early to tell if this is speculation or fact, but its been long suspected that Hutton wouldn’t last long in January in a Rangers shirt. As a Scotland fan, I think Spurs would be a good move for him, and good for the NT. As a SPL fan, I hate to see him leave the league, but I know the financial realities.
Ally McCoist and the rest of Rangers have been making comments all through December about wanting to keep Hutton in light blue, but they know they can’t compete financially with Spurs. I think the deal will probably go through, and good on Hutton for making it onto a bigger stage. He’s a great talent, and it’s only fitting that more people will get to see that.

What about Chimbonda? Is he on the way out or something? Why would Hutton want to sit behind him? Better for the Spurs Offside to answer that I guess, but why move to a club with an excellent starter already in your position?

I’m not sure why the switch makes sense for Spurs, but it would be a huge loss for Rangers. Hutton is thought of as maybe the best attacking fullback in Britain right now, so Spurs maybe think they can switch up his position and put him on the left … I don’t know their squad well enough to say.

I personally think he would have been a bad signing for Spurs. He’s a good player with potential for significantly more. However he’s a better attacker, which would fit someone like Juande Ramos. But we can’t have a young man whose defensive abilities still need more development because we have no defense as it is. Another time with better components and he would have been a great signing. But as we stand, he would have compounded our issues and it would set him back a few years.

And now SSN is reporting that he wants 2-3 days to think it over. C’mon lad, whats to think about. We offer you midtable mediocrity and pain (lots of enduring pain)

Yeah … I don’t know what he needs 2-3 days to think about either. Either you want $$$ (aka Premier League) or you want consistent Champions League appearances (aka Rangers). Personally, I’d rather see him go to Spain or someplace other than England, since Scotland has no internationals in leagues other than Scotland and England.
