#14 Scotland await the draw

By: Ian Rose | November 24th, 2007

Scotland slipped one position this month, from 13th to 14th place in the FIFA World Rankings, but are still safely in the second pot for tomorrow’s World Cup qualifying draw. I really like the spot we’re in, since the 2-seed saves us from playing some very tough teams that share that position, sides like Russia and Turkey. Fresh from the ultimate group of death in the Euro qualifiers, I think it’s time we had a bit of relief, so here’s my Group of Dreams for the draw tomorrow, as well as the Group of Death, which I feel is a lot more likely.

Dream:
1. Greece, 3. Switzerland, 4. Wales, 5. Azerbaijan, 6. Any

Death:
1. Italy, 3. Ukraine, 4. Bosnia-Herzegovina, 5. Georgia, 6. Estonia

The last two shouldn’t matter too much, but after what happened in Georgia in the Euro qualifiers, I have no particular need to see them again in this tournament. In fact, if we could just make a rule that none of the teams from Euro Group B get matched up with Scotland again, that would be just fantastic. I’m hoping there’s some karma in the draw. Since we need at least a second-place finish to qualify, avoiding a tough 3-seed like Ukraine or Norway is key. We’ll see how it goes. More tomorrow after the draw. Please, a little less of a mountain to climb this time around?

You watch: Canada’s making it this time. We’ll have us a licking of whatever microscopic Caribean country they throw at us, and then we’re in business.

So what do you think of your draw? I think England has it worse. France should qualify, no problems.
