Adu courting Celtic?
By: Ian Rose | July 13th, 2007Okay, this is pretty out there, but bear with me. Apparently, Freddy Adu of MLS’ Real Salt Lake is excited about the MLS All Star Game for more reasons than one. According to the BBC, Adu and his agent will be there to meet with the Scottish champions during their visit. I have to say, being a former Real Salt Lake blogger, I’ve seen Freddy Adu play quite a bit, and I think he’s a terrible fit for Celtic. Adu’s strengths are his creativity and talent, and those strengths have shined in the U-20 World Cup, where he’s finally shown himself capable on the world stage. But his weaknesses are magnified by the nature of the Scottish game. He’s small, he’s weak, and he tends toward being a bit timid on the challenge – not qualities that will serve him well in the SPL. Frankly, I think this whole Adu-to-Celtic business is going to amount to nothing. If he finds himself overpowered by midfielders in the MLS, as he often does, I can’t see him surviving in a rough, physical league like the SPL. Maybe somewhere like France, his skills could be useful, but in Scotland, he’d be roughed up inside ten minutes. We’ll see how this develops, but I hugely doubt anything will come of this.
