By ‘Eck, Elgin are rock-bottom

For a while there, he must have been one of the most satisfied men in Scotland. As Celtic compounded Alex McLeish’s misery with a 1-0 Ibrox win in February, a certain Frenchman was watching from the stands and hovering over the dugout like a shadow. There was no chance that Paul Le Guen - close to signing on at that point - wouldn’t let Rangers play anywhere near that poorly next season. Or so we were led to believe.
A few months on, Rangers are a few light years from Celtic and McLeish will not have been losing sleep over the problems of his successor. His record has only looked better with every point Rangers throw away. Any time a Premiership manager looks like he’s on the way out, McLeish’s name has sneaked in there somehow.
What better opportunity, then, to remind the rest of Britain of your abilities than with a team-talk at Elgin City, currently giving East Stirling a break from the Worst League Side in Scotland title. Elgin manager Brian Irvine is a good pal of ‘Eck’s from their Aberdeen days and decided to take drastic action by inviting him to do the pre-match motivational bit.
The big boys of the Premiership will no doubt sit up and take notice at the transformation the team-talk produced. Yes, the 3-1 away defeat to Dumbarton means that Elgin are now…the worst side in the whole of the UK!
