Caley lock up “Super Marius” Niculae
By: Ian Rose | July 18th, 2007I know, I know. This is the second story in a row about Inverness Caley Thistle, my beloved favorite club. No fear - I will return to all the Old Firm madness and Edinburgh craziness, complete with some sort of Vlad Romanov quote about Sumatran Rat Monkeys or something … soon … but right now, shockingly enough, Caley might legitimately be the story of the SPL right now.
We actually made a respectable signing. This might mean the apocalypse.
Just as I was starting to get excited about former Gillingham striker Dean McDonald, who I still like by the way, here comes Marius Niculae. One of my biggest complaints about Caley in the past few years has been that we lacked international talent. Whether Scottish NT or otherwise, I like to see national-team players on my club. It means more exposure for the club, and a whole different level of experience to share with the others. Niculae brings that. His 28 caps for Romania, and 12 goals in international play, show his quality, as does the fact that he played last year in the Bundesliga. Granted, Mainz, his old side, was relegated out of the German top flight, but still, a transfer from Germany is very rare in Scotland.
He has his own website. HERE. That in itself makes him unique at Caley.
There has been talk the past few years about Caley lacking any sort of attack, that we sit back and wait for mistakes. Frankly, we do that sometimes, particularly against the Old Firm, because it’s smart football and we like to win (as we did twice against Rangers last season). But that doesn’t mean that Charlie Christie and the Caley team don’t want to play attacking football. Hopefully, with Dean and now Marius (who I will from this point forward insist on calling “Super Marius”), we may just have that ability.
