Caley Thistle ends Pars hopes for survival
By: Ian Rose | May 12th, 2007Well, it was a nice Cinderella story while it lasted. The Pars of Dunfermline, sitting pretty solidly at the bottom of the SPL and looking to everyone’s eyes to be a lock for relegation, make a surprising late season run and give themselves a chance at both survival and a trophy, reaching the Scottish Cup finals. However, Cinderella stories rarely end well (except the actual story Cinderella, I guess). It’s midnight for Dunfermline, and their survival coach just went all pumpkin on their asses. Inverness Caley Thistle ruined Pars’ party today with a 2-1 win and officially relegated the Pars to Scottish First Division. Combined with a win from St. Mirren, there is no chance out of the hole for Dunfermline. It was a good fight, Pars, and think - you’ll certainly have bragging rights over the rest of First Division since you will actually be going to the UEFA Cup … good luck with that …
In other Scottish relegation news, Airdrie United lost to Stirling 3-2, meaning they will be going down to Second Division football this summer. Stirling, who had a pretty good run in the Scottish Cup this year, will be a welcome addition to the First Division. I love this time of year - promotion/relegation is what really keeps football vital and interesting … I wish we could get our heads around that in the states.
