Caley Thistle in legal battle over “Super Marius”

By: Ian Rose | August 2nd, 2007

Imagine it - you are the manager of a mid-level team in your nation’s top level of football. You rarely get a chance at international players, because of budget concerns, and add on top of that a location far away from big cities, another hurdle in attracting a big name. One day, a striker with a great international record practically falls into your lap, and before a bigger side can put in a bid, you jump at the chance and get him on a free transfer. The fee is high for your club, but a deal nonetheless.

That is exactly the situation Inverness Caley Thistle boss Charlie Christie found himself in last month when he signed Romanian international striker Marius Niculae. Niculae is without question the biggest signing in the club’s four years in the SPL, and brought hope of a new level of ambition for the side. Now all that is in jeopardy.

At first, it seemed like a regular British situation - there are always delays in new foreign players, especially from nations outside of the big European leagues. The work permit was promised, but day after day, it didn’t come. Then came the news that has shaken Caley Thistle - it has been rejected.

From what I’ve read, it sounds like it may be fixable, but not without a long process, and the season starts tomorrow. Already ICT is plagued with striker problems, including Dean McDonald’s ankle and Graham Bayne’s toe, and now this. I have to admit, not only as a Caley Thistle supporter but also as an SPL fan, I’m gutted. The government is wrong to deny a player of this quality a work permit.

Please join me in signing the following e-petition to support Marius Niculae’s permission to work in Scotland.

If he can be blocked, then how many other players will stop even considering coming here?

I’ll pass this around the message boards because I agree with your overall argument. This situation could hamper future foreign recruitment, and the strength of the league matters to every one. If he ends up grabbing a brace against the Bhoys, well, I’ll…I’ll…praise internet democracy at work.

Signed your petition. Your quite right mate big clubs always seem to work around this permit appeal part. Smaller teams always get punished.
