Celtic champions of Scotland
By: Ian Rose | April 22nd, 2007Well, it hasn’t been in serious doubt since December, but Celtic FC are officially the champions of the SPL for the second straight season, and for the fifth time in the nine years since the SPL split from the Scottish Football league. Rangers are almost certainly going to finish in second place, but Aberdeen can still technically take that spot, as Hearts did last season. Congratulations to the Hoops – they wrapped up the season in true 2007 Celtic style, with a last minute goal from Shunsuke Nakamura, my (and many Scots’) vote for SPL Player of the Year, to beat Kilmarnock 2-1. After an impressive season that brought them not only the SPL championship but also one goal away from the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Celtic have one more trophy to round up – the Scottish Cup against either Hibs or Dunfermline. Even with the Old Firm’s domination of Scottish football, Celtic didn’t even make the final last year, so they’ll be anxious to get their hands on the Double this season for the first time since 2003.
