Celtic completes matchday sweep for Scotland

By: Ian Rose | October 3rd, 2007

With a 90th minute strike, recent hero Scott McDonald has put Celtic up 2-1 over AC Milan at Celtic Park, and that is how the scoreline ended. I wasn’t able to see this one, as I was watching Benfica-Shakhtar, but having seen Celtic Park on a big match day, I can only imagine the explosion of support when McDonald saved the day. EDIT: Dida unfortunately felt the explosion quite personally.

Along with Rangers’ 3-0 win over Lyon yesterday, this win completes a Matchday 2 sweep by the two Scottish teams in the competition. Celtic rises to third place in their group, over struggling Benfica, and now sits three points behind Milan for the second qualification spot. Rangers are second on goal differential to Barcelona.

Fantastic couple of days for Scottish football (points-wise), with the two best sides in the land taking on two of the greats of Europe and coming out on the better end. Great job to both sides of Glasgow. They won’t be congratulating each other - the hate between these two runs far too deeply for that - but they both are doing their part for the stature of Scottish football (again, points-wise) across Europe and the world. Well done.

UPDATE: There is also the minor point of a Hoops fan slapping Dida. Ahhh, football in Glasgow.

Fantastic results for Scotland! Will you keep updating the UEFA Cup blog anyway? ;-) I sincerely hope so, because you will have plenty of Bundesliga CL rejects to cover after the group stages (though Bremen and Stuttgart also stand a good chance to finish 4th) and I need a place to redirect all my frustrated readers to. :-)

Great match, great win for the Hoops. The Milan defense was absent on the final goal. There really was no reason for them to be so greatly outnumbered in the box at that stage of the match, but I’ll sure as hell take it!
