Celtic fans should travel with their champagne
By: Ian Rose | April 20th, 2007This is the week. This has to be the week when Celtic finally officially wrap up the SPL title. With five games remaining, the Hoops are 13 points clear of Rangers, so the next Celtic win, or the next Rangers loss or tie makes it official. Celtic should have every confidence of doing so this Sunday at Kilmarnock, a side they beat in all three meetings this season. But, unfortunately for Hoops fans, their championship will be coming on the road this weekend, so all you Celtic fans, bring a cooler for that champagne.
The other matches this weekend include Aberdeen hosting Hibernian on Saturday. Hibs will have to decide how much effort to put into the end of the SPL season versus their Scottish Cup campaign, which they continue on Tuesday against Dunfermline. They are ten points out of the last UEFA Cup spot from standings, but because Celtic will already qualify for a Champions League place, they can reach the UEFA Cup just by winning their Scottish Cup semi. The Cup is probably their only way to Europe next season, and that may lead to some reserves playing against the Dons Saturday.
Their cup opponent, Dunfermline, also see the cup as their only chance at Europe next season, but need to concentrate on just staying in the top flight. Despite a better run of form lately, they still hold the relegation spot by 4 points under St. Mirren. Dunfermline hosts a hot Dundee United team this weekend, and they’ll do well to even take a point from them. Their relegation rivals at St. Mirren play Falkirk on Monday, hoping for some breathing space. Inverness Caley Thistle host Motherwell, with both sides tied at 36 points and looking for official safety this weekend. Rangers will also play Hearts on Saturday. Rangers have little to play for, as second place is assured and first basically out of reach, while Hearts is only three points off of third place and will look to solidify its UEFA Cup qualifying.
Looks like a nice weekend of football after the long Cup break.
