Celtic take Cup, 1-0 over Pars
By: Ian Rose | May 26th, 2007Well, at least there was one true double in British Isles football this year. Celtic have claimed the Scottish FA Cup by 1-0 over Dunfermline, on the strength of a Jean-Joel Perrier Doumbe goal in the 85th minute. Once again, as they were in the quarterfinals against my beloved Caley Thistle, Celtic show themselves to be one of the most dangerous sides in the world in the last five minutes. They always seem to get the late goal. Pars had a great run, beating the #2, #4, and #5 teams in the SPL on their way to this final, but #1 was just a little too much for them. It would seem unfair if they had nothing to show for it, but just reaching this final earned Pars a spot in the UEFA Cup, which is reward enough. Celtic celebrate the fortieth anniversary of their magical 1967 season (when they became the only side in history to win the European Cup with an entirely home-grown team), with a true double, the league and the Scottish cup. Congratulations to both sides on a great campaign.

Um, but don’t the Pars get relegated this season?

They do get relegated, but they’re still going to the UEFA Cup … might be the only lower-division team in it this year. Crazy thing - the fourth placed team in the SPL doesn’t go to any European play, but since there’s a spot for the Cup winner, and Celtic already has a Champions League spot, Dunfermline would have gotten it whether they won or lost.
