“Confident boy” O’Connor looks to score in England

By: Ian Rose | June 30th, 2007

Now that he’s made up his mind and is headed to Birmingham City, Scotland international striker Garry O’Connor is setting his sights high in the Premiership. He told The Scotsman about his hopes to end the drought of Scottish success at the striker position in England by making a big splash in his new jersey. O’Connor said of his Premiership aspirations:

“I’m ambitious and I feel nothing is holding me back because I’m a confident boy. Birmingham have been great and I want to score a lot of goals for them. There’s nothing stopping me scoring 15 goals next season”

Scottish fans will be watching, and Birmingham may well sell some shirts up north if O’Connor can live up to his ambitions. We’ve been waiting to see a Scot light up the Premiership, and even a 10-goal scorer would give Scots more reason to cheer than most recent efforts from Scottish strikers. All we really care about, though, is can he continue to score for Scotland, when it matters? Two goals in two games since Alex McLeish called him back to the Scotland squad gives us hope, but that was against Austria and the Faroe Islands. A goal against France or Italy could turn this “confident boy” into a national hero.
