Cup Corner

The much-derided CIS Cup got a welcome boost yesterday with a couple of hum-dingeroos. Kilmarnock edged out Motherwell at Fir Park thanks to the Invincibile man. Over in Glasgow, Falkirk were busy taking a leaf out of Southend’s book with a dramatic victory over Celtic, complete with extra-time and penalties.
Just what the girlfriend of J-VoH (as he shall henceforth be monickered) was after. Talk about being under the thumb…
Luckily for the SFL, tonight there’s arguably more potential for some shameless headline-grabbing on their tournament’s part. Tonight’s visitors to Ibrox are not the kind you want to be hosting when your team’s domestic form is a thing of derision. First Division leaders St Johnstone have the belief and ability to cause an upset, but First Division they remain. A win for Owen Coyle’s men would only steepen his star’s upward trajectory, while for Rangers - already out of the running for one piece of silverware - it could prove to be the first nail in Paul Le Guen’s coffin.
But the undoubted biggie is in Edinburgh, where Hearts could go some way to alleviating the pain of Saturday with a win at enemy fortress Easter Road. Victory for the home side, meanwhile, would not be the worst way for John Collins to begin his Hibs managerial career.
Graceful. Relaxing. Well-mannered. All things the latest Edinburuh derby certainly won’t be.
