Cup Corner - University challenge
By: Craig | November 17th, 2006
Drama. Upsets. Dodgy pitches. Oft-postponed replays. Patronising television commentators. Robert Duvall career-lows.
Yes, the Scottish Cup is back.
Last season, the oldest trophy in club football got some of its shine back after years of blue and green inevitability. True, finalists Gretna’s supposed against-all-odds run is exposed by their current league position, though at least the competition was once again becoming internationally known for David v Goliath feats rather than dodgy Ally McCoist performances. And the mostly non-SPL makeup of the quarter-finals was a joy to behold. But most of all, it provided the undisputed result of the season: Clyde 2, Celtic 1. They say first impressions count. No wonder Keano was back home in no time.
This weekend, the first round gets underway, with at least one non-league side guaranteed a place in the second as Highland League outfit Keith travel to Edinburgh to take on Edinburgh University - who kick off at 1.30pm due to not having floodlights!
Some have said the result will be ACADEMIC, but Edinburgh (academia’s LOAN rangers this year) plan to TEACH A FOOTBALLING LESSON to the Highlanders. Whatever happens, it certainly promises to be AN EDUCATION.
PS - anyone wonder if Luis Felipe SCHOLARi is a fan? (alright, that’s one horrendously laboured student-related pun too many! - Ed)
