Euro 2008, my picks at half-time

By: Ian Rose | June 4th, 2007

Okay, here they are. The Euro 2008 qualifiers are half over, and it’s time to make my unbiased (other than Group B, of course) picks for who will be in the big show next year in Austria and Switzerland.

Group A: Poland and Portugal
Group B: France and Scotland
Group C: Greece and Turkey
Group D: Germany and Ireland
Group E: Croatia and Russia
Group F: Northern Ireland and Spain
Group G: Romania and Netherlands

Imagine it … a Euro finals with Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and no England … doesn’t it sound magnificent? Well, it could happen. I’ll admit that the Scots are probably the long shot in this prediction, but the way the remaining games are set up, I have a lot of confidence. Look for spoiler performances from Lithuania (Group B) and Hungary (Group C) to make all the difference in the second half. These predictions are, of course, non-binding, but I will be posting as the qualies continue (including LIVE from Scotland v. Lithuania in September) and we’ll see how they hold up.

I think the Czechs will pip Ireland. They haven’t been the most impressive the last two games, but Ireland did nearly drop points to San Marino, so they’re not exactly thrilling themselves. Although maybe my love of Tomas Rosicky is blinding me.

Scotland in group B??? If Scotland can’t beat Ukraine or Italy how the hell are they going to qualify. I would go with the odds of France and Italy or maybe Ukraine if they get a result against either Italy or France but Scotland? They’re a plucky side but they don’t have enough gas to make it to the finish.

Dick - that’s certainly a reasonable take on it … the way Italy and Ukraine are playing, I think Scotland can beat them both, but we’ll have to wait until late this year to find out. Scotland is the only one in the group to have beaten France, and beating Italy or Ukraine is not at all impossible, but we’ll see.
