Gary O’Connor puts in winner for Scotland, 1-0
By: Ian Rose | May 30th, 2007Well, it wasn’t the most convincing win over the 77th ranked team in the world, but considering all the injuries, I’ll take it. Austria fell to Scotland just now, 1-0 in Vienna. The hero, newly recalled Locomotiv Moscow striker Gary O’Connor. In his 10th international cap for Scotland, Gary scored his third goal in the 59th minute of the match. His first was in 2005 against … Austria! Gary “The Austrian-Killer” O’Connor, a former Hibs standout, is Scotland’s hero for a day, and gives hope of some new offensive spirit. We’ve struggled with goal-scoring this year, partly in my opinion because of our over-reliance on Kenny Miller as a lone striker. I like the 2-striker set with Kris Boyd and O’Connor. The Scots face their next football giant (sorry) next Wednesday, when we take on the Faroes. We absolutely must win that match, and hopefully dominate it, to remain legitimate contenders for one of the two qualification spots from Euro 2008 Group B. For that match, we’ll have starting keeper Craig Gordon back, and hopefully Scott Brown as well. I hate to see the national team play without Brownie – he’s one of the real class in the country right now, and he belongs in the national kit.
Austria played earlier this year to a 1-1 draw with Ghana and only lost 1-0 to an admittedly depleted France, so they’re not a terrible team. It was good preparation, anyway. Good win, Scotland, if not an overwhelming one.
This is also sweet, if VERY cold-served, revenge for Austria’s 1-0 win over Scotland in the 1954 World Cup, the last time the two sides met in the WC. I don’t hold a grudge – I completely forget about losses after 55 years, so this one’s almost up.

Seems there was some controversy surrounding the match as far as Austria was concerned? I read something that the fans totally turned against their teams captain.
Anyway, I hope Scotland somehow manages to make it to the European championships. I would love them to do it at the expense of Italy. Just don’t tell anyone over in the Italian blogs that I just said that…;-) Because I too forget about WC losses after 55 years so there is still plenty of time in my case.
