Gretna and Caley get first wins of the season
By: Ian Rose | September 22nd, 2007There were two surprising results in today’s SPL action. First (and to me, foremost), Caley Thistle notched their first win of the season, 2-1 over Hearts in Inverness. Things looked to be starting as usual for Caley when Ian Black scored an unfortunate own goal to give Hearts an early lead, but Dennis Wyness equalized and player-manager Craig Brewster, making use of himself as a substitute, scored a 90th-minute winner with his head. After their victory over Rangers last week, there was some talk that the crisis for Hearts might be coming to an end, but they looked weak and unorganized for much of this match, and I’d say there’s more trouble ahead in Tynecastle. In the other shocker of the day, Gretna got their first-ever SPL win, beating Dundee United 3-2 and staying ahead of Inverness on the bottom of the SPL table. United would have gone even with Celtic at the top of the SPL with a win today, but Davie Irons’ relentless side never let them run with it, and Alan Jenkins scored the winner just before time to take all points.
Tomorrow, both Celtic and Rangers are in action, with the Celts headed to Easter Road to take on Hibernian, and Rangers playing host to Aberdeen. After the slip-up last week against Hearts, Rangers know they’ll have to stay perfect to stay close with Celtic, who lead them by a point now in the league table. The trip to Edinburgh might be one of the tougher challenges of this year’s campaign so far for Celtic, especially coming off of their demoralizing 2-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
