Happy homecoming for Uncle Walt?
By: Craig | January 5th, 2007
Needless to say, all sorts of rumours flying around this morning surrounding a certain managerial vacancy. Walter Smith and Ally McCoist - the sorcerer and his apprentice from Rangers’ 90s heyday - are being bandied about by everyone and his wife. Indeed, the only question seems to be over their roles. Some are saying that Smith would take over with McCoist joining the coaching staff, to be groomed up for a later promotion; others that McCoist would get the hotseat with Smith working with him on a short-term basis.
Inevitably, Smith’s role with the national team raises eyebrows and again, the media are split down the middle. Either he will leave it completely, opening the way for Alex McLeish to pick up where Smith left off in the Euro 2008 qualifiers; or his lesser role will allow him to combine the two set-ups. Whether such an arrangement would please Rangers or the SFA, however, is questionable, and Smith has been concerned for some time over a (frankly ridiculous) clause in his contract giving the SFA the right to sack him should we fail to reach Austria and Switzerland.
Finally, one of Smith’s stalwarts in the navy blue, Andy Webster, looks set to return from a none-too-happy foray in the Premiership with a loan move to Rangers.
