Hastings represents Caley, SPL in the Gold Cup

By: Ian Rose | June 7th, 2007

Here’s your fun SPL fact for the day. As the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup gets started in the Americas, Caley Thistle fans have a reason to be throwing their support behind Canada. Our very own Richard Hastings, who has played in almost 150 matches for Inverness Caley Thistle, is the one and only SPL professional in this year’s Gold Cup tournament. The 29-year-old native of British Columbia started playing at defender for Caley at the ripe young age of 17. After short stints away from Inverness at Ross County, Graz A.K. (Austria) and Maastricht (Netherlands), he returned to Caley in 2004. Hastings’ career includes scoring a famous golden goal, the only goal of his professional or international career, in Canada’s 2000 quarterfinal against Mexico, en route to their only Gold Cup victory. He was also a member of the Caley Thistle team that famously (at least in Scotland) beat Celtic in the Scottish Cup in 2000. You could say 2000 was a very good year for Richard. Anyway, Hastings started and played a full ninety in Canada’s first match yesterday, a 2-1 win over Costa Rica.

Good luck Richard and Canada … the Caley Thistle hopeful are behind you 100% (especially now that we aren’t distracted by the Scottish NT).
