Hearts fleece their big match visitors
By: Ian Rose | June 20th, 2007This just in … the Hearts front office makes a bonehead move that will make the rest of the SPL hate them slightly more. In other equally shocking news, the sky is reported to be “blue”.
Hearts, the same SPL side that brings you the bi-monthly ravings of owner Vlad Romanov, is pleased to announce that visitors to Tynecastle for matches against Celtic, Rangers and Hibs will be charged up to 30% more than last season. Apparently believing that slipping two spots in the SPL standings and going from a Champions League team to missing out on UEFA Cup qualifying is a 30% rise in quality, the Hearts front office is billing visitors accordingly.
Technically, SPL regulations prohibit a team from charging more for visitors than for home seats of the same quality, but Hearts know that most of their fans are season ticket holders, for whom the price difference won’t apply, and this is purely a tax on visiting fans. Especially considering that Hearts supporter’s clubs have recently boycotted matches away at cross-town rival Hibs for thir outrageous pricing, I’ll be curious to see the fan reaction. Frankly, it takes a match at Tynecastle off of my list of things to do in Scotland this fall.
When the SPL chose to start the season with an Edinburgh derby, they figured it would start with a bang. With Hibs fans already considering a boycott of their own, it might end up being a whimper.

The movement to decline ticket allocations is already afoot. I think people are trying to figure out how they can do it collectively rather than just each club declining individually, where there’s more risk they’ll give in at the last minute.
