Hearts take hard-fought derby
By: Ian Rose | April 1st, 2007Hibernian’s hopes for overcoming Hearts and taking the last UEFA Cup qualifying spot took a serious blow today with their home loss to Hearts, 1-0. Hibs was the more aggressive of the two sides, especially early, but Hearts were able to hold them off and wait for a good opportunity, which they got in the 81st minute from Lithuanian international Marius Zaliukas. It was only the second goal of the season for the Hearts defender, who scored off of an Andrew Driver free kick, and maybe the most important goal of his club career. With the win, Hearts move eight points ahead of Hibs with seven matches left, and put pressure on Aberdeen for the third-place position, which lies only six points ahead. Rob Jones and Hibernian will have a good chance to make up three of those points on Wednesday, when the face 11th-place St. Mirren, but will have a much tougher road to Europe than they would have with a win or draw.
