Hell week for Aberdeen in Egypt
By: Ian Rose | July 28th, 2007This is not the sort of trip you want in the weeks leading up to the start of an SPL season, especially a season that follows a very successful one like Aberdeen’s, in which they finished third, a feat which nearly no one is calling on them to repeat. This is the time for friendlies, training and hopefully a signing or two to bolster the squad. The Dons headed to Egypt for ten days in hopes not only of preparing for the SPL season, but also bolstering their surprising level of support there (Egyptian TV shows Aberdeen matches regularly after a number of friendlies played there in the past few years). Nothing much happened except …
- Winger Jamie Smith lost his luggage.
- Dons lost 2-0 to a team called Arab Contractors.
- Dons then lose 3-2 to Al Aluminum, prompting SPL teams across Scotland to consider changing their name to incorporate a trade, such as Hibernian Bricklayers or Gretna Steel.
- Michael Hart and Jamie Smith get in a car accident. Both should be fine.
- Chris Clark and Barry Nicholson get red cards in one match, and will start the season with disciplinary points.
- Keeper Derek Soutar leaves a match with a re-injured elbow.
- The team’s flight to Aberdeen is canceled because of the small matter of a cracked airplane windshield. They have at least three flights to get to Aberdeen. The status of Jamie Smith’s luggage is, at this time, unknown.
Wow. My heart goes out to you, boys. Try not to hurt yourselves any further in the preseason. That’s enough to make any manager want to stay home, and I’m sure Jimmy Calderwood is no different.

Gretna Steel is an awesome name. Actually, it sounds like an MLS name.

What a trip! Just out of curiosity, do you and team members use anything like Global Bag Tag when you travel? I use them and it just popped into my head.
