It’s (un)official - Scotland Wins.
By: Ian Rose | March 24th, 2007On the strength of an 88th-minute laser from Craig Beattie’s left foot, Scotland has just beaten Georgia 2-1 and regained the unofficial world championship of football, and more importantly, stayed at the top of Group B in Euro 2008 qualifying. As an Inverness fan, I never thought I’d clap and cheer to see Kenny Miller feed Craig Beattie for a goal. Those two have combined for more goals against Caley Thistle and the rest of the SPL than I can count, but the two Celtic forwards certainly stepped up and delivered today for the national team as well. Kris Boyd scored the other Scotland goal in the first half. Scotland now has 12 points on five matches, and goes into Wednesday’s huge match with Italy up five points on the Italians, though they do have a game in hand against group whipping boy Faroe Islands, so let’s call it two points. Still, great win - the Tartan Army is rocking Hampden Field right now.

Well done, Scotland. With France (barely) also claiming the three points, my evil plan to keep Italy out of Euro ‘08 is working!

Beating Georgia and Faroe Islands is a given. Lithuania are a bit of a surprise in this group but shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. If Scotland can’t beat the Ukraine and Italy than all hope is lost. Come June this group will change dramatically. I applaud Scotland’s fighting spirit but the true test is yet to come. Laurie, it will be a daunting task to keep Italy out of the euro because as you know a desperate Italy is a dangerous one. France pulled out three points just in time…looks like France’s luck has quite run out yet. Good luck on Wednesday Scotland!
