Kilmarnock win, put pressure on Hibs
By: Ian Rose | April 3rd, 2007Just three days ago, going into their Edinburgh derby with Hearts, Hibernian looked to be a serious threat for European qualifying and maybe even a run at number three in the SPL. They were coming off of their thrashing of Kilmarnock in the league cup final (5-1 to Hibs), and were about to present their fans with the first piece of hardware for the Hibees in decades.
The last three days, however, have not been kind.
First, they lost the match with Hearts, putting their assault on the #4 spot (and the last UEFA Cup place) in serious doubt. Then, that very Kilmarnock side that they walked over to earn their coveted cup last week won today (admittedly over Motherwell, but a win’s a win), and went three points above them, knocking them down, temporarily, to #6.
Luckily for Hibs, the schedule is on their side. Before the split, a vaguery of Scottish football which I will explain tomorrow, there are two more matches for Hibs, and one for Killie. Hibs plays St. Mirren and Dunfermline, far and away the worst two sides in the league. Kilmarnock plays Hearts, now sitting in fourth and rejuvenated by their derby win. So, fifth place should go back to Hibs tomorrow. But if it doesn’t, if St. Mirren pulls off the unexpected and beats them, what sweet cup revenge for Killie to be looking down on them from 5th place.
