Lasses teach the lads, beat Italy
By: Ian Rose | April 6th, 2007Take that, Azzurri. Kind of. Scotland’s men may have fallen to Italy in European qualifying (not that a 2-1 away leg loss to a world champion is shabby, mind you), but the national women’s team has gotten sweet revenge. The Scotland women, ranked 26th to Italy’s 13th by FIFA, and having never qualified for a Women’s World Cup, beat Italy by that same score of 2-1 today. The match was the last friendly before the ladies begin their own quest for European qualifying against Portugal on May 6th. We don’t tend to cover all that much in terms of the women’s game here on The Offside, but I’ll try to mix some news in from the Euro qualifiers. I’ll take “Scotland over Italy” any way I can get it. The win was powered by goals from captain Julie Fleeting (with a Nakamura-esque direct free kick goal) and Pauline Hamill. Great job, ladies.
