Look back at February in the SPL

By: Ian Rose | March 1st, 2008

There were 26 SPL matches played in February, and as always it was an important month for both the title race and the race for Europe. Here’s a look at the league table for February’s matches, and an overall league table as things stand right now.

SPL February Table

As you can see from the February table, the Old Firm stayed right on track with each other, both Rangers and Celtic winning all four of their league matches and Rangers taking the slightest of advantages on goal differential. The big winner for the month was Hibernian, who took four wins and a draw from five matches, and made up nine points on Dundee United, closing the cap between the two to only a single point. The biggest loser has to be Aberdeen, though it must be remembered that this was also the month that included the Dons’ 2-2 draw to Bayern Munich, as well as a win over Hamilton in the Scottish Cup. Still, in the league, they took a major hit to their ambitions of a return to Europe, and now the only way that looks likely to happen is by way of the Cup, and that means beating Celtic. Gretna’s win over Kilmarnock briefly had them thinking of survival, but eleven points in the hole, those thoughts will be short-lived.

My pick for Manager of the Month: Mixu Paatelainen of Hibernian
UPDATE: Aiden McGeady of Celtic has won Player of the Month, his second of the season. He beat my pick, Steven Fletcher of Hibs.
