Middlesbrough ups bid for Brown
By: Ian Rose | April 16th, 2007
As the player revolt in Hibernian’s locker room starts to settle down, Hibs fans have something new to be concerned with - the loss of rising star midfielder Scott Brown. Apparently, Middlesbrough are getting more and more interested in Brown, who has been a standout for Hibs in his five years in Edinburgh. He’s had his share of injuries, especially last season, but has been one of the most impressive players in Scotland this season, both for Hibs and the Scottish national team. Both Rangers and Celtic are gunning for him as well, but Middlesbrough is reportedly upping their bid to over 3 million pounds, and if a bidding war erupts, its doubtful whether Rangers or even Celtic could keep up. Some sources are saying that Broonie, as he’s called by fans, may even fetch 4 million. I have mixed feelings on this - exporting players is always a mixed blessing for any country. On one hand, good Scottish players playing in other leagues raises the reputation of Scottish football around the world and gets national team players great experience, but on the other, I’d like to see second-tier teams like Hibs and Hearts keep some home-grown talent in order to bring more parity to the league and hope for deeper participation in the UEFA Cup and Champions League. Either way, he’s a very talented young player, and I hope he stays healthy and keeps developing, for the sake of the national team. When Euro qualifying resumes and France and Italy come calling, we’ll need him.
