MLS All Star Game will be Scot v. Scot
By: Ian Rose | June 26th, 2007Even in the darkest times in Scottish football history, when few or no Scottish players went abroad, and we could barely fill our own rosters with homegrown talent, we were always strong in one position: manager. Some of the great managers and coaches in the world are Scots (including, of course, a certain Sir Alex) and as Major League Soccer prepares to welcome Celtic to play against its All Stars, they have chosen a coach who has more than a passing familiarity with wee Gordon Strachan and the Hoops. New England Revolution coach Steve Nichol is a native of Troon, Scotland, and a former Scottish international player with 27 caps. Nichol played in the 1986 World Cup for Scotland, but is better remembered for his time at Liverpool, where he played in over 400 matches and won 4 league championships and a European Cup. Good luck to Nichol and the MLS All Stars. Strachan, Nakamura, Boruc and the rest of the Bhoys will be using this as a tune-up for a run at the SPL three-peat, and will be playing to win, maybe more so with recent comments comparing the strength of the two leagues, and so Nichol will need all the luck he can get.
