More French hospitality: Lyon 0-3 Rangers
By: Ian Rose | October 2nd, 2007Can the Scots play the French more often?
It really is becoming quite a streak. First, the two Euro 2008 wins (admittedly both 1-0 and with a heap of luck involved), and now Rangers have gone to 6-time defending French champions Lyon and trounced them in their own house, to the tune of 3-0. The goals came from Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin, and US International DeMarcus Beasley. I don’t have a huge amount to say about this match, because I wasn’t able to see it live, but the table in group E speaks for itself. Barcelona - 6 points, Rangers - 6 points, Lyon - 0, Stuttgart - 0. There are still four matches to go in the group stage, but Rangers have made a fantastic start. I’m not sure anyone expected them to take three points out of their away leg in France, much less add +3 to their goal differential there. Even if Barca gives them nothing, I like Rangers’ chances for second, and the final 16 of the Champions League.
Now, let’s hope Celtic can get back on the horse with some kind of result from their home tie with Milan. Even a point would be respectable as far as I see it, but Celtic are going to have to get something on the road this campaign and continue to be one of the hardest home teams in Europe to beat.

Rangers seem quite bullish about their chances of taking points off Barca, at least from what I’ve read. Does that strike you as a correct impression?

I think a point is quite realistic. Three may be asking a bit much, but Rangers frankly don’t need three. They are in an extremely good spot.

They’ve done superbly in such a complicated group. I’m sure the game in Ibrox will be a big test for Barca.

Funny - most USNT fans think Beasley can’t play on the right, he gets stuck out on a left where we have a surplus. He’s one of the US’s best when he’s on his game, he was the leading CL scorer for PSV the year they lost to Milan in the semi’s on away goals.
