Mr. Gordon goes to the Premiership?
By: Ian Rose | March 23rd, 2007
On the eve of his start in goal against Georgia, Scotland keeper Craig Gordon’s club future is very much in doubt. Arguably the best Scottish footballer right now, Gordon is currently at Hearts. For some reason (I can’t imagine why), he worries about his job and the future of his club, and some of his comments after this past weekend’s horrible 4-0 loss to Dundee United have made it even clearer - Craig’s going to be leaving Tynecastle. And likelier than not, he’ll be headed to England to stand between the posts for a Premiership side. But which one?
There is talk of him possibly signing with one of the big four, but I’m not sure. Man U and Chelsea are quite happy with their goalies, and the most likely of the big guns might be Arsenal, with Jens Lehmann allegedly looking to get back to the Bundesliga. Arsenal could get a great deal on Gordon if they courted him now, while his unhappiness with Vlad the Improper and the rest of the Hearts front office is at its height. Arsenal’s had a frustrating season and might be looking to make a key change, so this could be good all around, and in my opinion the move would be great for Scotland. One of the criticisms of the SPL is that it doesn’t produce enough exported talent for other leagues - there aren’t as many Scotsmen in the Premiership, Bundesliga, Eredivisie, etc, for my liking, and experience in a top-tier league like the Premiership, particularly on a side like Arsenal that gets some international play, would only make him more formidable between Scotland’s posts.

I don’t think he’ll make the leap to the big four but you are right that he should end up somewhere in the Premiership. He is quality.
