Naka Don’t Go

By: Ian Rose | April 25th, 2007

While most of the footballing world is watching Brazilian Milan star Kaka, I am much more concerned today with Naka, (Shunsuke Nakamura, that is). Naka, the newly crowned SPL Player of the Year, seems to be very seriously considering transfer options away from Celtic. He was rumored to be going back to Japan a few months back, but it turned out to be, as so often is the case, only an internet rumor. Now, Nakamura himself has confirmed that he might consider a move to Spain or England. “If I were young, I’d want to stay at Celtic a little longer and then play in Spain before returning to Japan. But I’m getting old,” Nakamura told a Japanese newspaper. The set piece genius is 28, and mentioned that he thinks his chances of getting on a top league team outside of Scotland might drop when he’s 30. Having watched Naka many times for Celtic, I’d miss seeing him in the SPL, but if the money is there, he might do better in the Premiership or La Liga. I think he’d be an excellent addition to a team like Seville or Aston Villa, and any team that gets him will be lucky to do so, but here’s hoping the Hoops can hold him.

He’s been a joy to watch this season. I’d like to see him test his luck in Spain, England or Italy, but I can understand why Celtic fans are so eager to see him stay.

I think he might be able to do better than Villa. He’s been one of the driving forces behind Celtic this year, and he’s certainly caught the eyes of Europe after this year’s Champions League.

Freekick specialists are so important (AC Milan has Pirlo, Lyon has Juninho, Barca has Ronaldinho, etc), that I wouldn’t be surprised if a bigger club came in one the sly and snapped him up.

Spurs would be an excellent choice. Too bad they’re probably losing Berbatov … Naka and him would be a potent duo. I forgot to mention in the article that he was the first Japanese player to be Player of the Year anywhere in Europe. Awesome.
