Old Firm in the New World
By: Ian Rose | March 29th, 2007Ah, the plight of a Scottish football fan marooned in the US for at least part of every year. Unlike the Premiership, there is little to no coverage of the SPL in the states, except on high-priced subscription services, which I of course skip a few meals a month to buy. But I and the other (admittedly few) fans of the Scottish game who happen to be abroad tend to be frustrated by the lack of chances to see our teams play live. Well, this spring and summer, we have at least two chances to do just that. Both teams of the Old Firm, Celtic and Rangers, are headed to the US this year. As reported earlier today in Offside Galaxy, Rangers will come to LA to face the Galaxy on May 23rd. As much as I hate traveling to LA, this might be worth the trip. Then, Celtic will be playing the MLS All Stars on July 19th. That one, at least, will be well televised, and I’ll probably settle for sitting in a pub for it. Good to see the best two sides in Scotland coming and showing off the Scottish game here in the states. Ideally, it would be nice to see a high-quality but less well-known squad like Aberdeen come over, but they really don’t have a name that would attract even the harder-core American soccer fans.
PS – a quick addition – there seems to be an additional match between Celtic and the Chicago Fire on July 22nd, but I’m not sure if that’s a final date or not. They played three matches on their North American tour last year, so I’d imagine there’s more than just the All Star Game.

I saw Celtic play Manchester United in Seattle in 2003. It was a great experience. 70,000 fans in attendance and both teams played relatively hard for an otherwise meaningless preseason friendly. I can see why teams like to come to the States. They make a lot of money and get a nice holiday out of it to go along with some training.

Where are you located? A lot of the Celtic Supporters Clubs have pubs where they buy a box and show the matches. (That’s what we do here in Austin.)
