Old Firm swap places as Boruc falters
By: Ian Rose | September 23rd, 2007We knew it was going to be a dangerous weekend for Celtic. Coming off of the 2-0 loss at Shakhtar Donetsk that got their Champions League campaign off to an ugly start, the Easter Road visit was sure to be dicey. The 3-2 scoreline is no huge surprise, but the way it happened should be more unsettling to Celtic fans. Artur Boruc, who I firmly believe is a top-5 European keeper, let in two shockingly unnecessary goals. The two Celtic goals, from Aiden McGeady and Gary Caldwell, should have been enough for Boruc on most days, but he was clearly rattled from the start. Artur later apologized for the performance, saying “They were bad mistakes, but I am human and I will work hard to get back to my old form.” Good on him for honesty - he’s always taken responsibility for his less-than-stellar days, and I have no doubt that this will continue to be a rarity for him. Either way, Celtic had only one week to enjoy what many expected to be a long-term stay at the top of the SPL table. Rangers, starting the weekend 1 point behind the Bhoys, did everything they had to do in their home tie with Aberdeen, riding an all-Scottish trio of goalscorers (Lee McCulloch, Steven Naismith and Kris Boyd) to a 3-0 win. The table now reads Rangers (18 pts), Celtic (16 pts), Hibs (15 pts), with 7 games done. Both Old Firm sides play mid-table opponents next week, with Celtic hosting Dundee United (still sore from their embarrassing loss to Gretna) and Rangers traveling to Motherwell.
