Pars give away a lead, finish 1-1 at home
By: Ian Rose | August 16th, 2007Dunfermline had it. They had it in their hands. For most of their UEFA Cup match tonight against Swedish side Hacken, they were the better team, which in itself confuses me. Pars are one of those frustrating teams that plays just terribly in their league, but in a cup tie, they are dangerous. Last season, they were in the relegation spot practically all season, and yet they made it to the final of the Scottish Cup, beating Rangers and Hearts to get this UEFA Cup spot in the first place. Tonight, they made an early strike (1st minute from Jim Hamilton) and had plenty of chances, but an awful mistake from replacement keeper Roddie McKenzie let the Swedes back in. It finished 1-1, which is always a disappointment for the home side, since it puts pressure on for the second leg, but in this case, it’s a huge missed opportunity for Pars. They could have put this tie away. The way they were playing, I wouldn’t have been surprised by a 3-0 finish. 1-1 is a terrible result. Hopefully, they can bring it back, but they have it all to do in Gothenburg.
