Poor Berti Vogts …

By: Ian Rose | June 6th, 2007

Those were the days, weren’t they, Berti?

Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts is having one seriously bad week. First, he gets pelted with rocks after his current team, Nigeria, lost to Uganda in a qualifying match. He had apparently been considering leaving the post for some time, and the prospect of dodging more stones probably didn’t do anything to discourage this idea. Now, to add insult to (the threat of) injury, Vogts’ bosses in the Nigerian FA claim he can leave if he wants … they really don’t care.

“Are we worried over Vogts’ resignation? Nobody is worried here,” said FA spokesman Ademala Olajire. “He is a common employee who wants to leave. If he leaves, we will employ another person. We cannot lose sleep over his reported resignation. But he should make it formal.”

Feel the love, Berti? Maybe they’re starting to realize what the Scots learned in 2004 … no matter if you’re coaching Nigeria, Scotland, Germany, Kuwait, or whatever down-on-their-luck nation hires you next, you’re just not that good of a coach. Don’t get me wrong … I hope he doesn’t get hit by a rock … although his results over the years clearly indicate that a knock on the head might not be the worst thing.

Well, I have to thank Berti for giving the German FA the hint that Jürgen Klinsmann might be the right candidate for the Germany job. So probably he should just assign coaches and enjoy his retirement.

But in defense of his Nigeria job: he won two lost one I think. You can’t yet judge if he is a good or bad coach for Nigeria even though he certainly failed in Scotland. And the whole Nigerian FA is just a mess. They didn’t pay the flight tickets of all the players who then had to pay them themselves, there was a similar problem with the hotel bill, the hotel was full with cockroaches, Vogts doesn’t get paid on time either. It’s difficult to motivate players that earn their money in the European top leagues to take such a step backwards and deal with all the chaos. But probably a football coach in Africa also has to be able to deal with this and on there you might be right that Vogts probably should just let it go.

The article is spot on: B.V. is a crap.
In fact he was a crap player too. He could ever only tackle and kick the ball out of touch. Subsequently he was told to get the ball and pass it to Günter Netzer as quickly as possible. On the odd occasion when he did manag to cross the halfway line he was lost and needed a map.
His coaching is no different. He got the sack where ever he went. Love to see him at Tottenham.
And for the the recommendation of Klinsmann to the German FA. Living in LA Klinsmann was the only colleague being far enough away from him not to get irritated.
