Rangers 2 - Celtic 1 (awards, that is)

By: Ian Rose | April 14th, 2008

The annual awards in the SPL have been handed out, and no real surprises here, considering where the big teams are and why they are there. Walter Smith has his team ahead in the league with games in hand, alive in both the Scottish and UEFA Cups, and with their first hardware in three seasons already secured in the League Cup … there was no giving it to anyone else for Manager of the Year. Rangers pulled off a double in the two biggest awards, with Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar taking the honors as Player of the Year. Waiting for Chick Young’s response, considering he called Aiden McGeady unbeatable for this one months ago. No matter what team is involved, I do love it when the big pundits are wrong.

Aiden McGeady did take a consolation prize, though, winning the Young Player of the Year award, and deservedly so. Steven Fletcher has had a great season, but McGeady has been a really bright point for Celtic, even when the rest of the midfield have been at their poorest. He has won games all on his own, and considering his age, his talent is truly scary.

Congratulations also to Dundee United’s Willo Flood for winning both the Goal of the Year award (officially) and taking at least top-five in my list of favorite SPL player names. Nacho Novo, Willo Flood … it’s a draw, I guess.

Could there be anything more ridulous than handing out awards before the season is over? It is that hard to count the votes after the final match? I’m not saying the winners would be necessarily be any different, but with the title still in the balance, some of these awards might look meaningless in a few weeks time.

    Ridiculous policy? The SPL? Never.
