Rangers among clubs raided by police
By: Ian Rose | July 16th, 2007Details are a little sketchy, but here’s what we do know. The headquarters of Rangers, Newcastle United, and Portsmouth were raided by police as part of a corruption investigation between 7:30 and 9 this morning. Whether these raids are related to the transfers being looked into by Lord Stevens and the Quest investigation is unknown, though sources seem to be denying any link between the two. Not much to comment on right now, since I really don’t know much, but it doesn’t sound terribly good for Rangers.
Several internet rumors are spreading about the raids, but it’s hard right now to separate truth from gossip. One that might just hold water is that the raids were related to the transfer of Jean-Alain Boumsong from Rangers to Newcastle. The Stevens inquiry report mentioned this transfer in particular, and since two of the three clubs raided were involved, it’s tempting to see a link. Again, though, we know so little at this point that we’ll all have to just wait and see what develops in terms of announcements from the clubs and the police.
