Rangers CL opponent: Zeta?

By: Ian Rose | July 17th, 2007

Everyone, brush up on your Googling. Who is FK Zeta? When the Champions League draw was announced, and Rangers saw their opponents coming from the match between Lithuanian Hearts feeder side Kaunas and FK Zeta from Montenegro, they started preparing for another match against the Lithuanians. The Kaunas side is so intertwined with Hearts that playing them, for any SPL side, feels like a derby. Owner Vlad Romanov has essentially used Kaunas as a B side for Hearts (and, according to some, Hearts as a training ground for the Lithuanian National Team, but I digress). But, regardless of these complaints, we all thought Kaunas would walk through to the Rangers match.

Maybe not.

In the opening leg of their first qualifying round tie, in the first Champions League game ever played by a side from independent Montenegro, Zeta took down Kaunas to the tune of 3-1. Kaunas did get an away goal, but they conceded three, and will have to win by two at home to reach the second round, and a very hungry Rangers side that has been denied trophies two years running. Hearts fans were having a laugh earlier this month about Kaunas tromping Rangers, but they have to make it there first, and that’s looking like a very uphill battle.

Isn’t Zeta the one married to Michael Douglas or is she the Warrior Princess?

Something like that. I just hope they don’t get those bladey-frisbee things … ah, Wikipedia says its called a shakrum. Last thing Rangers need this week is a bunch of players on the pitch with razor-sharp discs.
