Rangers make up ground, Caley wins at Dundee

By: Ian Rose | December 1st, 2007

It’s been an interesting day in Scottish football. As JT at the Celtic Offside predicted, his Bhoys only managed a draw away at Hearts today, opening the door for Rangers to make up points. They did so, beating Kilmarnock 2-0 to make the race for the SPL a one-point affair. The Old Firm derby looming in January is going to be insane. In other results today, my boys at Caley Thistle got their best result of the season so far, beating Dundee United 1-0 in their own house. United had sported the best home record in the SPL this season, with six wins and a draw out of their first seven, but Caley made their eighth home stand far less profitable with a 20th minute Ian Black strike and a second half dominated by the Caley Thistle midfield. Great win for the Caley, now in 9th and within striking range of the top six. When your team struggles, a fan starts to scale back their wish list. In the beginning of the season, my ambition for Caley was a top-six finish. The ugly start to the season made me think more about survival, and possibly a decent cup run. Now, even with the chaos in the front office, the grumblings about John Rankin, and everything else going on at the club, Caley fans can once again dare to dream of an actual decent league finish. We did today what Rangers couldn’t do, win at Tannadice. With everything that’s been going on in the club, this has got to feel like a massive weight lifted from Craig Brewster’s 41-year-old shoulders.

In other results, Motherwell beat Gretna 3-0 in the Fir Park derby, continuing the woe that is Gretna 2007-08. Falkirk bounced back from their recent poor run with a romp over St. Mirren, 5-1. Pedro Moutinho had two goals in the rout, which was only Falkirk’s second win since September.

Dundee United’s stumble against Caley today is going to have Hibs drooling, the tasty aroma of a lone third-place league spot wafting their way. In their path lies Aberdeen, and we’ll see tomorrow if the Dons have been able to bounce back from the fatigue and disappointment of their trip to Madrid midweek.
