Rangers sign Darcheville from Bordeaux
By: Ian Rose | May 10th, 2007Rangers are looking to a Frenchman as part of their plan to revitalize the squad and dethrone 2-time defending champions Celtic. The Ibrox front office announced yesterday that 31-year-old Jean-Claude Darcheville had signed a 2-year deal with Rangers after a transfer from Bordeaux. The striker has apparently been considering a move to Rangers for a while - he was linked with deals from both Alex McLeish and Paul Le Guen when they managed Rangers, before current boss Walter Smith finally got him on paper. Known for his speed more than his shot, Darcheville has had a good five-year run at Bordeaux, netting 36 goals in 124 matches, and may be looking for even more productivity against the slower defenses of the middle-to-low-end SPL teams. It’ll be interesting to see how he does. He certainly has the ability to score in the big games, putting in the game winner in the 2002 Coupe de France, and he may be one piece of the puzzle that leads Rangers not only to SPL glory, but breaks them through the Round-of-16 UEFA Cup barrier and deeper into Europe.
