Rangers stomp Falkirk 7-2
By: Ian Rose | August 18th, 2007Falkirk went to Ibrox looking for vindication after what they felt was a harsh 4-1 loss to Celtic. What they got was something else entirely. Rangers saw their day start off very well when Daniel Cousin, in his first start for the side, scored his third competitive goal for Rangers after only 90 seconds. In the 34th, Steven Whitaker got another, but Falkirk was able to bring the match back into their sights with a Arnau Riera strike just before the break. After halftime, though, Walter Smith’s Rangers went on a rampage. Cousin scored again, and Darcheville also scored two. There were goals from Kirk Broadfoot and, at long last, Kris Boyd. Rangers hadn’t scored seven in a match since a 7-1 drumming of Dundee United in February 2005. On the bright side, Falkirk managed what Red Star, Zeta, Inverness and St. Mirren could not, and ended Rangers’ streak of clean sheets. Still, not much consolation when you’re beaten by 5, especially coming off being beaten by three last week.
In today’s other matches, Gretna got their first SPL point ever, drawing away at Hearts. Meanwhile, Caley Thistle lost another to St. Mirren, making them the only side without a point in the league, and sitting them in the very uncomfortable relegation spot. Kilmarnock beat Motherwell, and Hibernian and Dundee United played to a scoreless draw.
Rangers now sit on top of the SPL table with 9 points from 3 matches, and a goal differential of +10. Celtic will have been watching, and their match at Aberdeen tomorrow will have extra significance, as they know they’ll have to take points to keep up with their Glasgow rivals.
