Rangers take important early points
By: Ian Rose | August 5th, 2007It’s on. The SPL season kicked off this weekend with 5 matches, leaving only the Edinburgh Derby of Hearts-Hibs for Monday. The Old Firm started their respective assaults on the SPL title, with Rangers traveling to tricky but understaffed Caley Thistle on Saturday, and Celtic hosting Kilmarnock on Sunday. It was a great start for Rangers, beating Caley to the tune of 3-0, largely on the strength of a brace from captain Barry Ferguson. It ended a streak of three winless against Caley, their biggest bogey side of last season. Celtic started off on a bit less positive note, managing only a scoreless draw with Killie. In other action, Gretna began what may be a very long SPL campaign with a 4-0 home loss to Falkirk, who take the early 1st place spot with their +4 differential. Dundee United managed a 1-0 home win over Aberdeen, on a 90th-minute strike from David Robertson, after Willo Flood was sent off. In a match which might have relegation echoes later in the season, Motherwell went to St. Mirren and came away with all the points, taking the match 1-0 on a 3rd-minute goal from Steven McGarry.
One week down (except for the Edinburgh boys), and the first blood goes to Rangers, but it is a very long season, and we’ll see how Celtic react next week, as they travel to Falkirk. Rangers host St. Mirren in what should be another 3 points for them.

I have to agree, JT. They’re really rough, but I’d count on WGS to get them sorted relatively quickly. Rangers need to take full points and advantage until they do, though. Already an interesting season. Rough start for my Caley boys.
