Red Star coach fired before Rangers tie
By: Ian Rose | August 11th, 2007According to the Herald Tribune and several other sources, Red Star Belgrade have sacked coach Bosco Djurovski. Djurovski has been widely blamed for the club’s lackluster performance against Levadia Tallinn in the second qualifying round of the Champions League, a tie they expected to dominate. Instead, they barely survived, only winning on away goals. Red Star will face Rangers in Glasgow on Tuesday, and will be led by returning coach Milorad Kosanovic, who last coached the team from 1997-99.
Regardless of how poorly Red Star played against Tallinn, you have to question the logic here from the Belgrade front office. Firing the coach that led you to your first modern Champions League, and made you the first official champions of Serbia, doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Ask your opponents, Rangers - even good teams have bad matches. All you do when you shake up the management three days before the biggest match of most of your players’ lives is give them more to think about, and an excuse to fail. This is a team that sorely needs stability. Chairman Dragan Stojkovic, apparently the Vlad Romanov of Serbia, has fired eight coaches in eight years. That is not the sort of strategy that leads to success in Europe’s most prestigious football tournament. Believe me - Rangers are watching, and they’re smiling.
