RIP Eddie Thompson

By: Ian Rose | October 16th, 2008

Dundee United Football Club and Scottish football lost a friend yesterday, as United chairman Eddie Thompson died of cancer, at the age of 67. I’ve never been a United fan, but I’ve always respected Thompson as a champion for Scottish football and especially for the less-financed teams in the league. This says it all about lifelong Dundee United fan Thompson:

“You can change your wife, your house, your car, but you can never change your team.”

He got United their first shirt sponsorship deal. He poured his time, money and energy into the team the way few businessmen would. Since we don’t have a United blog (yet), it’s left to Scotland Offside to remember him, even in this small and insufficient way. RIP, Eddie.
